PU organizes conference on human rights day

LAHORE: (Monday, December 08, 2025): At the national conference organized by the Punjab University Human Rights Chair on the occasion of International Human Rights Day, Speaker of the Punjab Assembly Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan participated as the chief guest. The conference was attended by Punjab University Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mahmood, senior journalist Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Shami, President Academic Staff Association Dr. Amjad Abbas Magsi, Dr. Bushra Rahman, Chair Human Rights Dr. Abida Ashraf, renowned legal expert Ahmer Bilal Soofi, Dr. Mujahid Gilani, as well as faculty members and a large number of students from various universities.
Addressing the conference, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan said that millions of people came out onto the streets in Sydney, Washington, London, and other cities across the world against Israeli atrocities in Palestine. Unfortunately, however, similar large-scale protests were not witnessed in Pakistan and other Muslim countries, he added.

He said that although voices have been raised at every global forum against the genocide in Palestine, the question remains when everyone acknowledges the atrocities, why does the United States continue to use its Veto power? The speaker stated that after two Great Wars, the United Nations was established to create a better world, but if the oppression in Occupied Kashmir and Palestine cannot be stopped, then the credibility of such a United Nations must be questioned.
He added that the people of occupied Kashmir are forced to live under military surveillance, suffering constant psychological pressure. He stated that the Indian government is taking horrific measures to expel Muslims and change the demographic structure of Occupied Kashmir. He said that whatever we are doing for Kashmir and Palestine is insufficient; very little is spoken about Kashmir, and this responsibility does not rest on any single political party but on all political parties collectively.
Speaking about the dangers of wars, he warned that if a nuclear war were to occur, even vegetation would not survive for two hundred years. This, he said, is why he fears wars. He emphasized that the only force that can influence the political compulsions of the United Nations is the voice of the people, and disagreements must be expressed with reasoning, not humiliation.
Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mahmood said that the Khutba Hajjatul Wida is the foundation of human rights, and raising one’s voice for Kashmir and Palestine is a duty. He stressed that we must begin with our own homes and ensure that we do not become part of any injustice ourselves. Senior journalist Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Shami questioned the whereabouts of the UN resolutions on Kashmir. He added that today the United Nations has become merely a platform for speeches. He said that more than eighty thousand people have been martyred in Palestine, yet powerful countries have acted merely as spectators. The question remains: who will give human beings their human rights? Without strength, he said, no one will be heard.
Ahmer Bilal Sufi said that serious violations of the 4th Geneva Convention are taking place in occupied Kashmir. He said that international law binds even an occupying state to operate within certain limits. He said that all minorities in India are facing severe mistreatment and that the narrative of “Akhand Bharat” has become the biggest threat to global peace. He further said that Israel has incorporated aggressive religious doctrines into its foreign policy.
Dr. Mujahid Gilani, while presenting a detailed presentation on the atrocities in occupied Kashmir, said that the kidnapping of youth, the rape of women, and the forced widowing of women are becoming routine, while Kashmiris are sacrificing everything for their freedom.
Dr. Amjad Magsi said that grave violations of human rights and international law are being committed in Occupied Kashmir and Palestine, and Punjab University has always raised its voice for human rights. Dr. Bushra Rahman said that over the past four years, the Human Rights Chair has played an active role in raising awareness on human rights, and wherever exploitation occurs, it is necessary to speak against it. Dr. Abida Ashraf said that global powers have shown apathy toward the issues of Kashmir and Palestine, and that supporting the oppressed people of Sudan and Rohingya is also our duty, as the message of humanity and equality is universal.
